How
Deteqtive works?

From a single domain or IP address to the infrastructure behind it.

Overview

Deteqtive is passive DNS intelligence from Spamhaus. It records which DNS answers have been seen over time, so you can follow a domain to the IP addresses it has used, follow an IP address back to the domains that pointed to it, and see when each connection was first and last seen. It's built on Spamhaus's new Passive DNS API, which powers every way in: the interface, the API, the MCP server, Real Time Streaming and Daily Downloads.

Sign in once with your Spamhaus account and multi-factor authentication. The same sign-in works for the interface and for AI agents.

Search a domain, hostname, IP address or whole range, and match it exactly, by subdomain, by parent domain, by similar spelling or by keyword.

Investigate by hand, automate through the API, connect AI agents over MCP, or take the data into your own systems.

Understanding the platform

How it works

This page walks through Deteqtive from first search to finished investigation: what it does, how teams use it and the value it adds. Below, you'll find the four steps of an investigation, a picture of how the pieces fit together, and the guides to get you started.

  • What it does

Deteqtive gives you DNS history. Search forward from a domain to every IP address and record it has used, or back from an IP address or range to every domain that has pointed there. Every result shows the record type and value, when it was first and last seen, and how often.

  • How it’s used

    • Brand protection teams find lookalike domains and any domain using their brand, and see when each was first seen.
    • AI agent builders let agents query and pivot through DNS history over MCP.
    • Analysts investigate and pivot by hand in the web interface.
    • Penetration testers map an organisation's external footprint before an authorised test: the hosts seen under its domains and the addresses they've used.
    • Security engineers enrich alerts and automate lookups through the API.
    • Data and platform teams feed new observations into detection and analytics with Real Time Streaming, or keep their own copy current with Daily Downloads.
  • The value

One suspicious domain can lead you to the rest of the infrastructure behind it. The first and last seen dates tell you whether that infrastructure is new, still active or long gone. And because the data is weighted toward malicious and abusive activity, what you're hunting for isn't buried in noise.

Get your investigation started

Four steps from a single indicator to the infrastructure behind it.

  1. Start with what you have

Enter a domain, hostname, IP address or range. Match it exactly, include every subdomain, look up the parent zones, catch close spellings that suggest typo-squats, or find any domain containing your brand. Internationalised lookalikes are covered too.

  2. Pivot forward and back

Go forward from a domain to the IP addresses and records it has used. Go back from an IP address or range to the domains that have pointed there. Each answer is the starting point for the next question.

  3. Assess what matters

For every connection, see the record type and value, when it was first and last seen, and how often it was observed. That timeline shows whether infrastructure is new, still active or long gone.

  4. Take the next step

Run the same searches through the API, hand them to an AI agent over MCP, or bring new observations into your own systems with Real Time Streaming and Daily Downloads.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we hear most about Deteqtive.

All FAQs
  • What is passive DNS?

Passive DNS is a record of DNS answers observed over time. It shows which IP addresses a domain has used and which domains have pointed to an address, even after the records have changed.

  • How do I try Deteqtive?

Start a 30-day free trial from this page to search and pivot through the full history in the web interface, through the API and with AI agents over MCP.

  • Can I use Deteqtive in my own tools?

Yes. Use the API, with an OpenAPI specification for generating client libraries, connect AI agents over MCP, or take the data into your own systems with Real Time Streaming and Daily Downloads.
